1 18 MUNCIE STAR, THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 21, 1963 Steam Heat Probation Officer Will Hearing Is Conduct Purdue Workshop Chief Probation Officer David ployment Development, U.S. De- Thursday Local objectors who are opposing the discontinuance of steam heat in downtown buildings will get an opportunity to present their case Thursday morning. THE INDIANA Public Serv. Ice Commission will conduct a hearing on the matter at 9:30 a.m. in the Board of Works room at City Hall.
The Indiana and Michigan Electric Co. wants to discontinue its steam heat service it now provides to eight municipal, 50 domestic and 194 commercial customers in downtown Muncie. I says it would take more than $1 million to replace the antiquated equipment now in use. The company contends the system has lost money in seven of the past 10 years. THE ELECTRIC company wants to discontinue the service at the end of this winter, but objectors have called for more time in order to install alternate means of heating.
Most of the objectors, including the city, community schools, and several private individuals, are asking a delay of at least two years. The county government, however, has announced it will fight the complete proposal. Optimists Hear Talk Russia Trip R. F. Bevins recently returned from trip to Russia, spoke of first hand observations and impressions of Russian life and culture. Bevins said that Russia to him seemed to be a "Land of Contradictions and by the same token while speaking about Russia it was difficult to avoid contradicting oneself. Bevins illustrated his talk with color slides he took on the trip. He said that only on one occasion was he advised not to take pictures and then he felt that the real reason was that the Russian did not feel proud of the subject being photographed. The Russians for the most part live a rather drab sort of existence, but seem to be contented because it is the only way of life they know.
Bevins pointed out that in traveling a distance of 230 miles, he only saw two passenger cars, but lots of trucks. Telephone directories were non-existent in Russia, he said and most of their churches were made into museums.
